The paper will first present an analysis of the concept of ‘world order’ and why we need it, together with the question of who establishes and maintains it. After outlining the main premises of the liberal world order, the paper will discuss its ideological foundations with reference to the open economic system and interdependence, liberal principles and democratic peace theory, as well as multilateral institutions. It will be followed by an analysis of internal and external challenges that continue to shake the foundations of the current order.
