Through Trials and Triumph: A New Spell of Democratic Transition in Pakistan

The year 2013 was a significant date for Pakistan. The democratic transition, which took place then, led the country away from military rule. The election cycle, which followed in 2018, proved to be even more impactful as the leader of the Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N) Nawaz Sharif was disqualified from politics forever.

The year 2013 was a significant date for Pakistan. The democratic transition, which took place then, led the country away from military rule. The election cycle, which followed in 2018, proved to be even more impactful as the leader of the Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N) Nawaz Sharif was disqualified from politics forever. Subsequently, Imran Khan won the elections and become the Prime Minister of Pakistan. This paper aims to analyse the key features that led to Khan’s rise. It will examine the emerging civilian middle-class that currently dominate Pakistan’s public sphere. It will also reflect on Khan’s political narrative and its resonance with voters. Finally, the paper discusses key challenges that the government will face moving forward.
