This paper aims to analyse the national armies’ interventions in the Arab World’s political arena with particular emphasis on the cases of Algeria and Sudan. Accordingly, the structural characteristics of the Algerian and Sudanese armies are examined with scrutiny on their patronage connections. Moreover, the paper also explores the possibilities of preventing the direct interventions of the military in national political affairs. Conversely, the idea of a progressive reform that pushes the armies out of the political spectrum will also be assessed. Last, the paper also attempts to present recommendations that could improve civil-military relations in the region.
