The Future of Education in Türkiye

Mahmut Özer sheds light on the future of the Turkish education system in his latest book, “The Future of Education in Türkiye: Equality, Inclusion and Quality.”

Based on his long-term educational research, Özer provides insights into the future of the Turkish education system by considering a global educational agenda. As stated in the title of the book, Özer reviews the steps to redesign an education system in Türkiye that is more equitable, inclusive, and qualified. The opening section of the book is key for a comprehensive understanding: Özer draws attention to the importance of “focusing on continuous development and the connections between the components of the system instead of big reforms in education.” Then, Özer reviews prominent projects initiated through his tenure as Minister and provides essential outputs with all their backgrounds. In this context, he outlines a wide array of projects that have facilitated the revival of vocational education and training (VET), early childhood education (ECE) and lifelong learning over the past few years. Another prominent content of the book is the comprehensive assessment of Türkiye’s education steps during the Covid-19 pandemic. Lastly, the author discusses the relationship between education and NEET in light of education’s contribution to social welfare and development and suggests ways to improve equality in education. Based on the experience of a senior policy maker, the book offers very substantial implications for the future of the Turkish education system.
