This discussion paper examines the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic in India and how the lack of testing facilities presents a larger risk in densely populated poor areas of the country. Socio-economic dynamics are also explored, such as the impacts of the lockdown on rural workers in cities and the emerging conspiracy theories connecting the spread of the virus to Muslims. Furthermore, the paper sheds light on the policymaking approaches of the Modi government, arguing that the Covid-19 response is of similar ill-planned nature as many of the policies implemented by ruling BJP in recent past.
